Family Movie Night – Despicable Me

Movie Night will be held on Friday, November 7th! Join us on the back field to watch Despicable Me 2 on a huge inflatable movie screen! Gates will open at 6:30p, movie starts at 7:00p, so bring your lawn chairs and jackets. Registration forms going home this week or print here. Prices will be $10 per family if paid in advance ($15 at the gate) and includes popcorn. Additional refreshments will be sold on site separately. Rated PG, with a run time of 98 minutes, this is a family event so parent supervision is required. To volunteer to help with this event, please sign up here. Holiday Craft Day

HolidayCraftDay200This year’s Holiday Craft Day will be held on Saturday, December 13th. Session 1 will be from 9:00-11:30 am, and Session 2 will be from 12:30-3:00 pm. Each child will choose two crafts to make as gifts for the holidays. Please save the date so your child doesn’t miss this wonderful event. Please e-mail Jackie Burke or Nickol Petersen if you are interested in volunteering for this event.

Halloween Grams

halloweenHalloween Grams will be sold by STUGO in the morning Oct. 20-23. Grams cost $1 each and will include a Halloween flashlight and a treat send to the person of their choice. Grams will be delivered during school during the week of Oct. 27.

Spirit Week

spirit_week200Spirit Week is October 27-31. Help your child show their CCES Spirit by dressing for the theme each day!
Monday- Sport Shirt Day
Tuesday- Wacky Sock Day
Wednesday- Neon/White Day
Thursday- School Pride Day (current or past Copper Canyon shirts!)
Friday- Halloween Costumes! (Don’t forget costume guidelines and the Halloween Parade at 8:20)


Calling all Box Toppers (you know who you are!). Do you do more than just look for the box top on your regular box of cereal? Do you ask your friends or family to keep their box tops or food labels? Do you run an office collection? Do you want to share those ideas with others and maybe just maybe win tickets to a PTA event? Email Erin Jackson or send a note in with your box tops and tell me that extra little thing you do with Copper Canyon in mind. One lucky winner will be chosen for each of our four collections through out the school year. The winner’s idea will be recognized in the newsletter. The first collection will be September 30th.
The recipient of the winning idea will receive tickets to Family Movie Night. The winning class for our first collection will be awarded a root beer float party! Happy clipping!

Are We a PTA or PTO?

This is the question we get asked a lot lately. We are both. We have received our employer identification number and are officially Copper Canyon Elementary School PTO, Inc. In mid-June we filed our request to become a 501c3, a nonprofit organization, with the IRS. We are told it could take up to eight months to receive notification that the documents are approved. Our nonprofit status is retroactive to the date we filed, so YES your donations are tax deductible.
The PTA is not allowed to donate or gift the remaining money in our account to our PTO. We will need to spend down the account to zero, and then we will dissolve the PTA. In addition to funding the programs for this school year, which averages approximately $63,000, we will begin the process of determining where the school needs are and how our school gift can be of most use.
Our PTO is where our fundraising profits are kept, which means separate bank account, financials, and even insurance. You’ll notice subtle changes as we transition and more obvious ones which will include a new website, logo, and look to our newsletter. We plan to get the community involved in helping make some choices regarding our branding. A great way to stay informed is by attending our general meetings throughout the year.

Be Kind People Project

The Be Kind Pledge: I pledge to: Be Encouraging, Be Supportive, Be Positive, Be Helpful, Be Honest, Be Considerate, Be Thankful, Be Responsible, Be Respectful, and Be a Friend.
The mission of the Be Kind People Project is to improve the social, emotional, and learning environment in our nation’s schools by purposefully thanking teachers and equipping students with character development tools that build positive and healthy relationship skills and foster social and emotional learning.
Keep your eyes open for the work of the month in the school newsletter and throughout the school. Please reinforce and talk with your child about the word of the month, and continue to model kindness at home.
The PTA is donating $3000 to the CCES Be Kind People Project this year. Come to the next Parent Education meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 6:45-7:30 pm in the library to learn how you can help!

Please join us September 22 in the library for the first General Meeting of the school year. There will be a Meet and Greet starting at 6:15 pm, with the general meeting starting promptly at 6:30. Hear about the amazing programs the PTA/PTO will be providing to the students and find out what is going on at the school this year. The budget for the school year will also be voted on. The process includes reviewing our projected expenses and income for the school year. The Budget Committee has their proposed PTA and PTO budget for the 2014-15 school year available for review in the school lobby and on our website for your perusal prior to attending the meeting. Please contact Mary Hampton Lovekamp with any budget questions prior to the 19th. The meeting should last about an hour, then stick around for the CoyoteFest Kickoff Meeting!
